Rough Front is a design studio that proposes new ideas for architectural space, ornamentation, surface design, and detail. Rough Front blends cutting edge design and manufacturing technology with analogue methods and an appetite for conceptual tensions: precision versus indeterminacy; analogue versus digital; pre-industrial versus post-industrial methods of fabrication; formal excess versus minimalist restraint. Eschewing convention and expediency, the studio values the complex notion, the intricate pattern, the rough surface and the soft form.
Rough Front pursues projects for and in collaboration with institutions, corporations, designers, artists and individuals.
Rough Front was founded in 2014 by Elijah Porter, who is a designer based in New York City and a graduate of the Yale School of Architecture.
